For Everything there is a Season and a Time for Every Matter under Heaven (2023)

The initial impetus for this series of four paintings began with my missing the four Canadian seasons while living overseas in Cairo. It was after living in another country that I came to realize the beauty, the fecundity, the diversity of landscape, the variety of cloud formations, the expansive and varied blueness of the skies, the sounds of populars tinkling in the breeze, the smell of pines and the cedars, the abundance of growth in the forests of Canada.

I prepared four canvases and decided to begin with each canvas referencing one of the four Canadian seasons - spring, summer, fall and winter. Working on all four paintings at the same time, over a period of a year, I thought about the sounds of each season, the feeling in the air, the movement of the wind, water, the variety of weather, the change of light and particularly, the felt dynamic energy present in the specific role each season performed in this cyclical and seasonal notion of time.

As I was working on this body of work, the constantly changing and shifting surface of these paintings also reflected the passage of a lifetime - our childhood, early adulthood, middle age and if we are lucky enough, old age. Each period with its own purpose, each phase, its own kind of accumulation, learning and perhaps most importantly, letting go. Such an abundance of experience, of living.
