CAI - YYZ: ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES (2021)

CAI-YYZ Arrivals and Departures was a series of twelve painting for an exhibition at Ludmila Gallery in Peterborough, ON in 2021. I painted this series living in Cairo and missing so much of my life in Canada. As a foreigner experiencing all the ambiguities of living in a foreign country - not understanding the language, not participating in the religious practices, not knowing the cultural norms and expectations, I began to imagination walking through familiar forest paths in Cape Breton, experiencing the dramatic change of seasons, smelling the wetness of rain, seeing the bluest of skies, hearing the silence, taking my breath away with the coldness of winter, being surrounded by the fecundity of life, and an abundance of lush and growing green. I missed all this and the deep, meaningful and often complex relationships of family and of long and endearing friendships. So I found myself painting my way home.
